I recently traveled abroad from Sydney to Yokohama

I recently traveled abroad from Sydney to Yokohama, Japan. The service worked well in every country, including Hong Kong and Taiwan. I especially liked how the service switched automatically. I mainly used the Internet, and it worked very well. I didn't use the phone service much, but it worked okay when I received a call on the cruise ship. I recommend trying this service, as I've had it for two years.

I waited before writin' a more detailed review.

I waited before writin' a more detailed review. I've been with Fonus for my fourth bill for the 20Gb plan US$29.99 (C$47 on visa with exchange). First, I asked lotsa questions before signin' up. I was so sceptical at first 'n was a lil afraid of losin' my old number if portin' didn’t go right. I bought an eSIM plan. Customer service was great. Fido ported my number within a couple of hours but my phone wasn't set up correctly so I went on WhatsApp 'n they answered fairly quickly. It worked perfectly. It takes some gettin' used to. Like android phones can’t use the message app (green) but instead you gotta go into your Fonus app to see those. Also, you gotta initiate your iMessages with the person’s email instead of their cell number if that’s how you initially started iMessage with that contact. When makin' a call, need to use the Fonus app. Or sometimes you can hold the number of the contact down 'n scroll down to select to dial from Fonus if this makes any sense. Rogers is only 4G so I went into Cellular settings 'n selected Bell or Telus only which is 5G. I was in Poland, Austria 'n Croatia last month. I had no issues findin' a connection 'n upon landin', it would just connect on its own. No need to buy eSIM cards anymore! If you travel a lot, this is a great deal. You do have to be a lil tech savvy to switch over as there are a few nuances. I can see how someone could be annoyed or get frustrated but once you get it up and runnin', it’s a great plan.

I've been using this service for

I've been using this service for around 1.5 years. Things took a turn when they revamped their services. Billing became a big issue, with some folks not getting refunds from the old system but still being charged. Plus, the service didn't even function properly in South America, so I had to switch to another service for that area. And let's talk about customer service. Initially, they were friendly, but lately, their attitude has become quite snooty, like they always think they're right and you're wrong. Take the network system, for instance. I had to manually select my network every time I crossed the US/Canada border. Before, customer service would give me carrier names for my trips to Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. But now, they just say it'll happen automatically without giving me the info I need (especially since I had to reload my app for another issue). Makes me wonder if I'm talking to a real person or some AI!

Overall, Fonus has been a decent option for our Canadian

Overall, Fonus has been a decent option for our Canadian phone number during global travels. It's been handy for calls, data, and SMS over the last couple of years. Recently, we've encountered an issue where some numbers don't dial or get answered properly. This mostly happens with corporate automated systems in Nova Scotia. For example, calling Canadian Tire at 902-457-1001, the system should give you department choices. But two months ago, it rang 10 times before showing a "network error." Now, it just goes to a voicemail without any identification, making it unclear if it's Canadian Tire's voicemail or a network one. Fonus support mentioned they've reported it to their tech team and will get back to us once it's fixed. You can find more details on this in our phone article on yesRetired site.

When I first started using Fonus

When I first started using Fonus, I encountered a few quirks during the setup process. However, these were quickly resolved with the help of their 24/7 online support. I found that making calls to both US and European numbers from Canada was easy and I didn't experience any dropped calls. This is a pleasant change, especially considering the high prices charged by Canadian telecom companies. I haven't had the chance to evaluate the service while traveling in Europe yet. Unfortunately, I've had trouble connecting my phone to my vehicle. While it can receive calls, it won't dial them. As for all the people complaining, I think they're just a bunch of whiners.

I tried out this phone

I tried out this phone service, hoping to save a bit on my monthly bill, but it turned out to be a huge mistake. Calls kept dropping, and the reception was terrible. My clients and friends complained about how choppy everything sounded. It was really frustrating, especially since I need reliable service for work. I'm in Oakville, Ontario, and it just didn't work well here. To make things worse, they don’t offer refunds. It’s just not worth saving a few bucks if you can't depend on your phone. I wouldn't call this company reputable at all based on my experience. Avoid if you need reliable service.

Man, what a letdown. They

Man, what a letdown. They advertise unlimited data, but it's a joke. I hit 70GB and bam, down to 128kbps. My buddy got throttled after just 10GB! Customer service was no help either—couldn't even tell us when speeds would drop. Paying $77 CAD for this is ridiculous. Even their throttled speeds are worse than what’s out there. They claim 3G speeds in their policy, but 3G should be around 3MB/s, right? Not what we got. And when I tried to port my number out, they dragged it out, probably just to squeeze another month of payment. Wouldn’t recommend Fonus at all.

Living in Toronto, tried Fonus

Living in Toronto, tried Fonus and it's been a headache. Fonus uses a VOIP app that just doesn’t work well. My phone number doesn’t link with iMessage, so I can only use iMessage through my email, which is super annoying. Plus, it won’t connect to my car, meaning I can't make hands-free calls. Calls drop all the time, and the 20GB data they promise isn't enough since the app itself eats up a lot of data. The whole experience has been frustrating, and I can't rely on it for basic phone functions. Definitely not worth it.

I've been with Fonus for a few years... the service is mostly fine, though there are occasional issues. Lately, I couldn't reach my texts, call log, contacts, or the dialer in the Fonus app. I contacted them through chat and email. They fixed it after about 5 hours of trying different "solutions" ... often removing and adding the app again. But after one day, the same problems came back. Once more, I spent hours trying to fix it.. still no luck fixing it so far.

I've had Fonus for a couple months now and it's been a nightmare. Every morning, I waste so much time just trying to get my phone to function. Feels like I'm always uninstalling and reinstalling things. It's frustrating because I never had these issues with Virgin Mobile. Honestly, switching to Fonus was a big mistake. I miss the reliability I had before. Now, I'm stuck dealing with constant problems. It's been really disappointing.

Overall, I am happy with the service

Overall, I am happy with the service and especially the cost. There are a couple of drawbacks: numerous places (like banks) won't send verification texts to VOIP numbers, which is a major downside for me. The 'updated' App doesn't handle group messaging well. You can message several contacts, but responses are handled individually. the 'seamless' carrier transition is inconsistent when moving between Canada and the U.S.

I've been with Fonus Mobile for about

I've been with Fonus Mobile for about 11 months. I haven't experienced any dropped calls or missing texts. It works well abroad, as well as in the USA, and sometimes even better in certain countries. Support is available whenever needed, and they respond quickly. The only hiccup is with group texts in the Fonus app, which can be confusing at first. Apart from that, a great company overall.

Adequate Service and Assistance is quite fast.

Adequate Service and Assistance is quite fast. However, I still don’t have Call Forwarding, even though their IT team keeps saying they "are working on it." Also, they can't receive verification texts for 2 Step verification from some agencies and banks, which makes it REALLY annoyng. I've used it in Canada and the USA with varied results, but haven’t tested it in other places.

I received quick help from Fonus to activate my Hot Spot.

I received quick help from Fonus to activate my Hot Spot. I must say that since they teamed up with KPNL, the service has improved a lot. No dropped calls, no need to redial, and the clarity is great. All of this, plus better pricing. You’re doing really good now…. It’s a real winner, everyone!!! Keep up the great work.

Messaging worked well.

Messaging worked well. I had a problem with unnecessarily large photos, but the internet worked excellently with fast download speeds. However, there is a minimal delay when playing online games. Phone calls worked much better after I installed the codec that Roger's used with its VoIP service.

People have said that their calls drop and get choppy

People have said that their calls drop and get choppy a lot with this service. Lots of issues with the connection; sometimes you can barely hear or be heard. This seems to be because of problems with the pings. It's not just me noticing this—many others on various sites have said the same.

Fonus service is quick and efficient.

Fonus service is quick and efficient. I faced a few small issues trying to activate two numbers on one account (different phones). They were resolved fast. The app is somewhat awkward, missing options to block calls and set favorites. But it works fine for calls and texts.

Since I started using Fonus a few months back, it's been pretty much worthless. I spend the beginning of each day trying to make my phone work right, often needing to uninstall and reinstall. I never had issues with Virgin Mobile. I regret choosing Fonus.

The company offers dependable service at a fair cost. My only gripes are that their app lacks support for group texting and dark mode. Apart from these drawbacks, I'd suggest this to anyone.
